* February 3 - The Mallory family is murdered by [[Barnett Davenport]], who was employed by them. He violently bludgeoned Caleb and Jane Mallory, including their eldest grandchild, Charlotte, to death. He then sets the house on fire, which kills the other grandchildren, John and Sherman Mallory. He is arrested six days later, when he was found hiding in a cave.
