- January 29 - King George III of England dies after a nine-year regency. He is succeeded by his son, prince-regent George IV, as King.
- October 8 - Henri Christophe, King of Haiti (Henri I), ill and unpopular, commits suicide, fearing a coup by his generals. His son and heir, the unproclaimed King of Haiti, (Jacques-Victor Henry) was murdered 10 days later.
