== Events == * May 19 - American Indian Wars: the Fort Parker massacre takes place, resulting in the deaths of 5 U.S. settlers. * October 29 - Charles-Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, (Later Napoleon III) the nephew of Napoleon I, attempts a coup d'etat against King Louis Philippe, rallying the regiment of Strasbourg to his side where he planned for the uprising to begin. The prefecture is seized, with its prefect arrested. However, the coup fails when a general commanding the garrison escapes and calls in a loyal regiment. Louis-Napoleon flees to Switzerland, while the mutineers are captured and arrested.
