- December 29 - The Wounded Knee Massacre takes place when a detachment of the 7th Cavalry Regiment under command of Colonel James W. Forsyth slaughters more than 250 Lakota Native Americans on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota in response to a growing religious movement known as the "Ghost Dance", which was perceived to be a threat to American expansionism.
