The 2020 Floyd Riots is the name given to the riots across America in 2020 and 2021 following the murder of George Floyd by white police officer Derek Chauvin. While many have blamed the riots solely on the Black Lives Matter movement (which, although mostly peaceful, did have a small fraction of supporters who participated in the riots), most of the rioters were simply criminals who exploited the movement as an excuse to riot. Many members of the far-right anti-government Boogaloo movement also took advantage of the riots to attack the police. Crimes committed during the riots included looting, vandalism, assault and in some extreme cases arson and murder (at least 25 deaths were linked to the riots). Tens of thousands of people were arrested for participating in the riots. One of the most well-known events during the rioting was the establishment of the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ) on June 26, 2020. The CHAZ (also referred to as the Capitol Hill Occupied Protest or CHOP) was a self-declared autonomous zone in the Capitol Hill area of Seattle. The area was occupied by BLM protestors who took over the area, including the police station, and some of whom allegedly participated in acts of violence, including one incident where masked men carrying assault rifles entered a cafΓ© and held patrons at gunpoint. Several people were also shot in the zone, with police and ambulance workers prevented from reaching the victims by protestors. The zone was cleared by police on July 1. Antifa were vocal supporters of the riots.
