During the rampage, the the Supreme Federal Court, the National Congress of Brazil and the Planalto Presidential Palace in the Três Poderes Plaza were raided by mobs of supporters of outgoing Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2022 election, in which opposing candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defeated Bolsonaro in. The riot was perpetrated by supporters of Bolsonaro, who alleged that immense voter fraud took place. Many of which falsely claimed that voting machines malfunctioned in favor of Lula. At least 300 rioters have been arrested for their participation in the riots. The riots have resulted in at least 80 injuries in total. == Comparison to the 2021 United States Capitol storming== The attack has received widespread attention for being a similar insurrectional coup to the United States' January 6th attack in 2021. Particularly in the United States, many American journalists and politicians have compared the attack for being similar and even possibly inspired to Trump's false claims of electoral fraud in 2020 and the January 6th U.S. Capitol attack. U.S. President Joe Biden has released a statement on Twitter condemning the riots that took place in Brazil: Jair Bolsonaro was additionally a strong political ally of former U.S. President Donald Trump. When Trump lost the 2020 United States presidential election, Bolsonaro additionally sided with him in believing that the election was rigged against Trump's favor. == Trivia == *The riot took place two days after the second anniversary of the January 6th attack in the United States.
