Claiming that the attacks and deaths were higher than the numbers given, Öcalan stated that these events were a part of the armed struggle carried out by the PKK, that these attacks were carried out in accordance with his orders, and that he was primarily responsible for the organization that carried them out. According to Human Rights Watch, between 1992 and 1995, by the PKK led by Öcalan; At least 768 people, mostly civil servants, teachers and civilians, were extrajudicially executed and killed, and 39 women and 76 children were killed in 25 different massacres carried out by the organization's guerrillas in the same period. Between 1995 and 1999, 21 different suicide attacks were carried out across Türkiye by the organization's "suicide squads", mostly consisting of women. Amnesty International condemned the human rights violations committed by PKK members, especially against civilians and prisoners. Human Rights Watch also requested that the asylum request of Öcalan, who is thought to have committed a [[crime against humanity]], should not be accepted by any country. Öcalan was arrested in 1999 by the Turkish National Intelligence Agency (MIT) with the support of the CIA in Nairobi and taken to Turkey, where he was sentenced to death under Article 125 of the Turkish Penal Code, which concerns the formation of armed organisations.<ref>[https://www.hr-dp.org/contents/553|access-date=2021-01-07 Öcalan v Turkey]</ref> The sentence was commuted to aggravated life imprisonment when Turkey abolished the death penalty in support of its bid to be admitted to membership in the European Union. From 1999 until 2009, he was the sole prisoner on İmralı island, in the Sea of Marmara. Öcalan now argues that the period of armed warfare is past and a political solution to the Kurdish question should be developed. The conflict between Turkey and the PKK has resulted in over 40,000 deaths, including PKK members, the Turkish military, and civilians, both Kurdish and Turkish. From prison, Öcalan has published several books, the most recent in 2015. Jineology, also known as the science of women, is a form of feminism advocated by Öcalan and subsequently a fundamental tenet of Kurdish nationalism.
