Abdullah Maute was born in Lanao del Sur in the Philippines at an unknown point in time. He and his brother Omar studied Islamic theology growing up, and Abdullah was educated in Jordan. Both were also senior members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, however they and their five brothers all left the group after it began to use non-violent methods and pledged allegiance to [[ISIS]], as well as establishing connections with terrorist leader [[Ameril Umbra Kato]] and founding Maute group to overthrow the Filipino government.
