On April 23, 2018, Alek rented a Ryder van and drove to Finch Avenue, where he ran a red light and drove down the sidewalk and began hitting people, during the attack, he re-entered on to the roadway and a witness said that Alek looked at his victims in the eye before killing them. His attack stopped at Mel Lastman Square, where he was arrested. After his arrest, he attempted suicide by a cop, demanding the officer shoot him in the head while holding an object which he attempted to pass off as a gun.
