Two weeks before the elections, the Welt am Sonntag newspaper published the text of an e-mail that Weidel had sent on February 24, 2013. The text mentions conspiracy theories belonging to the Reichsbürgerbewegung area, Sinti, Roma and Arabs are defined "peoples without culture by which we are inundated". In a first reaction Weidel denied having ever written that text following these statements the Welt newspaper presented an affidavit of the recipient, Weidel's lawyer then confirmed the exchange of communications and withdrew the falsification charges. Frauke Petry, in an interview with the Leipziger Volkszeitung (LVZ) expressed sympathy for the possible horror of the voters for the text of the communication, a phrase that was interpreted by the newspaper as a distancing of the candidate.
