He then served as Secretary of State from 1943 - 1945. He signed into law a number of racial laws disadvantaging Serbs, Jews and Roma and oversaw the establishment of a series of [[concentration camps]] in which thousands were tortured and murdered. He was convicted of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide in 1986 and died in custody two years later.
