On December 30, 1974 Barbaro armed with a .30-6 rifle with telescopic sight, a 12 gauge shotgun and smoke bombs left his home with his mother's car upon arrival at 14:50 p.m. He entered the school building through an open side entrance and went to the third floor where he blew up a coke bottle filled with gasoline and a fuse. In a hallway he encountered janitor Earl Metcalf and when confronted Barbaro shot him in the chest with the 12 gauge shotgun then took up a sniper position at a window on the third floor of the school and began shooting at people passing by in and around the street as firefighters and police arrived Barbaro continued to fire, keeping them at bay. police soon surrounded the building and at one point they entered the building throwing tear gas and found Barbaro unconscious. Barbaro was transported in an ambulance and examined uninjured and taken to the Olean City Jail.
