On December 30, 1974, at about 3 p.m., 17-year-old Anthony Barbaro entered Olean High School armed with a .30-06 rifle with telescopic sights and a 12-gauge shotgun in a hallway, killed janitor Earl Metcalf with a shot to the chest, and began shooting at people passing by on the street from a third-floor window.

Born September 9, 1957 in Olean, New York, to parents Nazzareno and Helen Barbaro was the oldest of three siblings and attended Olean High School, where he was described as quiet, but was a good student, even an honor student and earned one of the highest academic scores. Police found no possible motive a fellow member of the rifle team said Barbaro to wanting to hold up the Olean Armory and confront the police.

In a hallway he encountered janitor Earl Metcalf and when confronted Barbaro shot him in the chest with the 12 gauge shotgun then took up a sniper position at a window on the third floor of the school and began shooting at people passing by in and around the street as firefighters and police arrived Barbaro continued to fire, keeping them at bay. police soon surrounded the building and at one point they entered the building throwing tear gas and found Barbaro unconscious. Barbaro was transported in an ambulance and examined uninjured and taken to the Olean City Jail.
