The Axis Powers was the collective term for the alliance between Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and Imperial Japan (as well as various other countries) during the events of World War II - it stood in opposition to the Allies and became a term that is still used in the modern world as a metaphor for societies that are regarded as evil or warlike.
The Axis Powers managed to gain amounts of Europe, Africa, East and Southeast Asia and the Pacific Oceans during the height of their power but were ultimately defeated at the end of World War II with the fall of the Nazis in Europe and later the bombing of Japan by America.
Although the Axis Powers were an alliance each member had different ideas of how to shape the world, the only thing they seemed to share in common was their enemy: the Allies (as well as democracy in general).
