On 7th August 1998, Azzam and [[Mohamed Rashed Daoud Al-Owhali]] drove a truck laden with explosives to the US embassy in Nairobi, where Al-Owhali fired on guard Benson Okuku Bwaku after he refused to open the gates. They then drove through the gates, where Al-Owhali threw a stun grenade at the embassy guards before jumping out of the truck and running away.
