Clyde approached the courthouse with a lot of gear, and fired into the entrance. However, he was overwhelmed by police and security forces and only superficially injured one person. After the confrontation, he ran to the parking lot where he collapsed. Later, after being taken to the hospital, he was pronounced dead.

The shooting initially received very little attention in the first few hours of it having had happened. However, when the notorious image of Clyde approaching the courthouse in a balaclava, tactical gear, and him holding a clip surfaced, numerous people started mocking the obvious attention seeking aspect of such, and some deduced that he thought that committing [[mass murder]] was like video games. Many pointed out the major failure of the attempted shootout.
