He is also allegedly responsible for the murder of Marie Elizabeth Spannhake, who disappeared in 1976. ==Biography== Hooker was born in California in 1953. When he was 19 and working at a lumber mill, he began a relationship with his future wife [[Janice Hooker|Janice]], who he convinced to comply with his violent sexual fantasies. These fantasies initially consisted of having sex with Janice while she was suspended from a tree by handcuffs, but following their marriage in 1975 this escalated into whipping her, choking her and holding her head underwater. Janice later claimed at Hooker's trial that she did not enjoy these acts but continued to comply out of misguided love for Hooker. She also claimed that Hooker had abused her emotionally as well as physically and sexually and had brainwashed her into being submissive to him. Eventually, Hooker and his wife came to an agreement. Hooker told Janice that they could have a child together and he would stop subjecting her to his violent fantasies if he was able to take a slave girl as an outlet for his fantasies. Janice agreed on the condition that Hooker would not have penetrative sexual intercourse with the victim. After they had their child, Hooker insisted that the other end of the bargain be upheld. In 1977, Hooker picked up 20-year-old hitchhiker Colleen Stan in Eugene, Oregon. Hooker drove off the interstate before putting a knife to Stan's throat and placing a wooden box over her head. Upon driving back to his home, Hooker blindfolded Stan and hung her upside-down from the ceiling. Hooker then beat her before having sex with Janice beneath her. Over the next seven years, Stan was brutally abused by Hooker. She was forced to stay in a box under Hooker's bed 23 hours a day, only coming out for one hour when Hooker would feed and abuse her. He convinced her that he was a member of a group called "The Company" that would hunt her down if she ever escaped. Hooker would whip Stan, beat her, choke her and electrocute her. He also orally raped her, and penetrated her vaginally and anally using foreign objects, considering vaginal or anal sex to be a breach of his agreement with his wife. Stan was forced to sign a "slave contract" declaring her Hooker's slave for life and was renamed "K". Hooker forced Stan to refer to him as "Master" and banned her from talking without permission. Eventually Hooker agreed to let Stan go outside as a reward for her obedience, but her belief in the Company prevented her from trying to escape. Hooker put her to work doing slave labour such as helping him construct an underground dungeon for more slaves. She was briefly allowed to visit her family, with Hooker accompanying her so she would not reveal her situation. Eventually, Janice had enough of Hooker when he decided to make Stan his wife. In August 1984, seven years after Stan's abduction, Janice admitted to Stan that neither she nor Hooker were members of the Company, although she maintained it existed. Stan promptly fled Hooker's home, telling him over the phone that she was leaving him. A few months later Janice reported Hooker to the police. In addition to Stan's kidnapping, she also confessed that they had previously abducted missing Marie Elizabeth Spannhake in 1976 and that Hooker had tortured her for sexual gratification until he grew bored and attempted to slit her throat before strangling her to death. However, her body could not be found and all physical evidence had been destroyed by Hooker and his wife. Police decided they did not have enough evidence to charge Hooker with Spannhake's murder, but were able to charge him with kidnapping and rape on the evidence of Janice and Colleen Stan. Janice was granted immunity from prosecution in return for testifying against her husband. Hooker's defence introduced testimony by a psychiatrist arguing that his actions were no worse than the drill endured by new military recruits but this was shut down by the judge. Hooker was convicted on all charges and sentenced to 104 years in prison.
