A loss of innocence usually happens when an especially shocking or horrific crime takes place that continues to affect society long after it's has actually happened. More often than not, events like these (two notable examples being child [[murder]] and [[Terrorism|terrorist]] attacks) cause unprecedented outrage in society and challenges our concepts of what people can do to each other. 

Often, victims whose innocence are lost would never be the same person they used to be.
