| Brueckner is said to have lived in the Algarve in Portugal, where Madeline disappeared from, between 1995 and 2007 and to have had several jobs in the area, however it is also claimed that he committed various burglaries and dealt drugs. In 2005, he attacked and raped a 72-year-old tourist from America. Two years later, he fled to Italy but was extradited to Germany on drug charges. Brueckner was ultimately found guilty of both the drug charges and the 2005 rape and sentenced to seven years in prison. He is currently serving this sentence in Germany.

| In June 2020, Brueckner was named as the prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeline McCann, with the press referring to him as "Christian B" (German authorities usually do not release suspect's surnames). Mobile phone records place Brueckner in the area on the night of Madeline's disappearance and he reportedly told a friend in 2017 he "knew all about" what happened to her. He also re-registered his car under an acquaintance's name the day after Madeline disappeared. He has not yet been charged with any offence relating to this, but prosecutors say they have evidence that will allow them to indict Christian B in 2022. It has been rumoured that either fibres from Madeline's clothes or items belonging to Madeline were found in Brueckner's camper van, although investigators refuse to comment beyond saying the evidence is "not forensic". There were also reports that Portuguese authorities intended to charge him with raping an Irish woman in 2004.

| On 11 October 2022, prosecutors in Germany filed charges against Brueckner on five counts of rape. He is accused of raping two women in their apartments and beating them with a whip, holding a young girl prisoner in his apartment and sexually abusing her and raping two young women in Portugal, including the Irish woman in 2004. He reportedly filmed himself during these assaults. Police also stated the same month that they were planning to charge him in McCann's disappearance.
