Brueckner is said to have lived in the Algarve in Portugal, where Madeline disappeared from, between 1995 and 2007 and to have had several jobs in the area, however it is also claimed that he committed various burglaries and dealt drugs. In 2005, he attacked and raped a 72-year-old tourist from America. Two years later, he fled to Italy but was extradited to Germany on drug charges. Brueckner was ultimately found guilty of both the drug charges and the 2005 rape and sentenced to seven years in prison. He is currently serving this sentence in Germany.

In June 2020, Brueckner was named as the prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeline McCann, with the press referring to him as "Christian B" (German authorities usually do not release suspect's surnames). He has not yet been charged with any offence relating to this, but prosecutors say they have evidence that will allow them to indict Christian B in 2022. There are also reports that Portuguese authorities intend to charge him with raping an Irish woman in 2004.
