Damantio ad Bestas was a form of capital punishment where a prisoner would be maimed and killed by an animal inside a cage. One of the most famous examples is Daniel from the bible, who was thrown in a lion's den by King Nebuchadnezzar. This form was abolished by the Romans in 681 A.D
