At around 4:39 p.m., he drove a red 2010 Ford Escape SUV and rammed into a multitude of people, killing 6 and injuring 62 others. Eyewitnesses of the massacre told police that the culprit drove the SUV in a "zig zag pattern" to hit as many parade participants as possible. Brooks damaged his SUV and later sneaked into the home of Waukesha resident Daniel Rider, lying to him about being homeless and that he needed his help to call Uber. Daniel was unaware of the massacre, so he briefly allowed Brooks inside his home and offered him a sandwich and a jacket. The police came and arrested Brooks. Brooks faced a total of 77 charges: 61 charges of first-degree reckless endangering of safety, 6 counts of first-degree intentional homicide, 6 counts of hit-and-run resulting in death, 2 counts of felony bail jumping, and 2 counts of misdemeanor battery. He was found guilty on all counts and received six sentences of life imprisonment, plus an additional 1,067 years.
