~ DeWayne Lee Harris at trial.

DeWayne Lee Harris (born 1963), AKA The Seattle Shoelace Slasher and The Seattle Jungle Killer, is an American serial killer. He would abduct women, bind their hands with shoelaces, rape them and strangle them to death before disposing of their bodies in "the Jungle", an undeveloped area near Seattle's I-5 highway.

Biography

DeWayne's first victim was 42-year-old schoolteacher Denise Harris (no relation), who he first met on First Avenue in downtown Seattle. He got her drunk and took her to the Jungle, where he tied her hands with shoelaces, gagged her with her bra, raped her and strangled her with a belt. He did the same to 33-year-old Antoinette Jones in November 1997, dumping her body about half a mile from Denise's. Not long after, he stabbed 25-year-old Olivia Smith to death in her apartment building, leaving her body in the stairwell. He also abducted a fourth woman while she was walking home, took her to the Jungle, bound her with shoelaces, raped her and tried to strangle her but was stopped when a homeless man named Daryl Smith intervened.

DeWayne was arrested for an unrelated robbery charge before he could kill again. While he was in jail, Denise Harris's body was found by a homeless man. DeWayne called lead investigator Mike Ciesynski and told him he knew the identity of the murderer, promising to tell him in return for being released. He convinced him he was telling the truth by revealing he knew several details he shouldn't, like a beer can hanging from a tree near the scene and that Denise's purse was missing. He led police to a ravine in the Jungle where he had hidden Denise's purse in return for a cappuccino. Detective Ciesynski began to suspect he was the killer; however, on the way back from the ravine he received a report that another woman had just been founded raped and murdered in the Jungle who had been killed earlier that day. As Denise's death was believed to be the work of a serial killer who used shoelaces as a signature this could potentially have exonerated DeWayne; however the victim was not bound with shoelaces, indicating it was a different perpetrator. DeWayne was informed that it was the same perpetrator in order to lure him into a false sense of security.

DeWayne was promised release from prison in return from the killer's name and implicated Daryl Smith in order to get revenge on him. Police began searching for Smith, but during the search DeWayne's surviving victim came forward. When interviewed by Detective Ciesynski she told him about her rape, which was similar to Denise Harris's murder. She failed to identify Daryl Smith when shown pictures of him, but did identify DeWayne as the attacker. DNA was taken from a coffee cup DeWayne had drank from during an interview and was matched to DNA from the killer's semen.

DeWayne was confronted with this new evidence. He confessed to the murder of Denise Harris and the other two murders. When asked why he killed them, he replied "Because I could" before going on to describe killing people as his ""hobby". He also implied that he had killed more people than just the three identified victims, saying that "For three bodies, you might get 32 more" and that "If you let me walk out that door right now, there'd be four more body bags". He was convicted of three counts of murder and sentenced to 94 years in prison.
