'''Elizabeth Anne Holmes''' (b. February 3rd, 1984) is the disgraced CEO and founder of '''Theranos''', a currently-defunct health technology company that rose to popularity after it was told to have revolutionized blood testing by utilizing methods that take small volumes of blood. Prior to being the founder of Theranos, Holmes was former Stanford student who majored in chemical engineering. She was a student researcher and lab assistant for the campus' college of engineering, until she eventually dropped out in 2004. Her remaining tuition money was eventually used to fund for Theranos.

== Biography ==
Holmes was born to Christian Rasmus Holmes IV and Noel Anne Daoust on February 3, 1984. Her father, Christian was the vice president of Enron Corporation which was defunct since 2001 due to bankruptcy regarding accounting scandals. Holmes attended in her early life at St. John's School, taking an interest in computer programming in high school. She would later attend Stanford University and studied chemical engineering.

Holmes eventually dropped out in 2004 and her remaining funds were used in establishing her company, Real-Time Cures.

==Theranos==
Holmes founded Real-Time Cures (which would later become the infamous '''Theranos''') which they claimed that the company will devise blood tests requiring little amount of blood and can be performed rapidly. Despite this, the claims are later proven to be fraudulent.

=== Suicide of Ian Gibbons ===
'''Ian Gibbons''' (March 6th, 1946 - May 23, 2013) was an English biochemist working as the chief scientist for Theranos since 2005 until his death in 2013.

On 2011, he had been involved with a patent theft case involving Theranos and the American enterpreneur, Richard Fuisz who was a friend and neighbor to Holmes's family, however due to the fraudulent actions of her company, Fuisz's connections to Holmes had cut off afterwards. Theranos filed a lawsuit against Fuisz's patent regarding their technology. Gibbons was aware of Holmes's lies but was afraid to testify in the court in fears of losing his job. Theranos was actively discouraging him from ever testifying in the court where he was told to appear in the court on May 17, 2013 by Luisz's lawyers. Eventually struck by grief and depression, Gibbons committed suicide by taking an overdose of paracetamol and alcohol. By the next morning, his wife found him lying unconscious and was taken to the hospital where he died on May 23, 2013 of liver failure.

In October 2015, American journalist John Carreyrou published an article that exposed company fraud from Theranos. The article made allegations that the company recorded inaccurate results and substituted commercially available machines manufactured by other companies during testing. Stanford professor, John Ioannidis also wrote in a peer-viewed medical journal that their claims are "exaggerated". By 2016, Holmes' net worth dropped from an estimated $4.5 billion to literally zero.

In 2018, she was evenutally found guilty of four counts of wire fraud. She is currently awaiting sentencing. Theranos' chief operating officer, Ramesh Balwani was also charged with fraud and his trial began in March 2022.

*The 2018 book ''Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup'' by John Carreyou is a nonfiction biography that details the life and downfall of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos. This was followed from Carreyou's investigations and findings on Holmes' scandals in 2015.
*Holmes is the main subject of the 2019 documentary ''The Dropout''.
*Hulu released a miniseries in March 2022 titled ''The Dropout'' based on the 2019 podcast of the same name. Amanda Seyfried stars as Elizabeth Holmes.
