This was not his death date; he abdicated because he'd made a promise that he wouldn't reign longer than his grandfather, Emperor Kangxi. Under his reign China reached its greatest territorial extent and its economy boomed, leading some to consider him the greatest Qing emperor. In the process of this he ordered thousands of Dzungars massacred in what would become Xinjiang; this is one of the first recorded [[genocide]]s of the modern era.
