The other Eric wore a trench coat and hung out frequently with a guy named Robert who was tall and wore his hair similar to Dylan's hairstyle.''

Thus, when talking about Eric and Dylan, some students confused them with other people who wore trench coats or were considered outcasts. The Washington Post stated: “In recent days, the pair seemed even odder than before — at least in retrospect, students said. ‘You would see them sort of marching down the hall together with their berets, dark glasses, their boots and their makeup.’”. Eric (nor Dylan) had never worn makeup or a beret. These assumptions, rumors and inconsistencies are what have made the case so confusing to the public over the past 22 years. It is also what contributed to post Columbine's version of what was referred to as "Satanic Panic" in the 1980's, but in reference towards the goth subculture.
