In 2020, an FDLR commando unit ambushed DR Congo park rangers in Virunga National Park, killing 12 rangers, a driver, and 4 civilians. In February 2021 the FDLR was accused of killing Luca Attanasio, the Italian ambassador to the DRC. However, investigations revealed that a local gang had killed Attanasio in an attempted kidnapping for ransom.
