On May 15, 2022, shortly after Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was killed by Israeli security forces,[2] and during a period of high tensions between Israel and Palestine due to Israel's actions, the Israeli police conducted a raid in the Jenin refugee camp where Abu Akleh was shot. During the raid, operatives of PIJ shot and killed a police officer named Noam Raz.[3] Although his name was not reported at the time, Salameh was later named as having been involved in Raz's killing and became wanted for this and several other shootings.[4] He was also a known associate of the late terrorist leader Wadee al-Houh,[1] who was killed by security forces in October 2022.[5]
In late 2022, Israeli police received intelligence that Salameh and Lions' Den were conspiring to carry out more attacks, and that Salameh was attempting to secure funding for Lions' Den.[6] On November 2 they launched a raid and tried to arrest Salameh in Jenin.[7] At the time of the raid, Salameh was in a butchery attempting to have a cow slaughtered for his upcoming wedding.[1][7] He attempted to flee before pulling a gun and opening fire on the officers, who returned fire and shot him in the chest, head and abdomen.[7] Salameh was admitted to hospital but pronounced dead on arrival, with PIJ issuing a statement confirming his death.[6] A teenager named Muhammad Khalouf was also killed in the raid,[7] although the circumstances of his death are unknown.
