Female genital mutilation (FGM), also known as female genital cutting and female circumcision, is a torture method that involves the removal of female genitals. This method can be found in the Middle East, parts of Africa and some parts of Asia.
UNICEF estimated in 2016 that 200 million women living today in 30 countries—27 African countries, Indonesia, Iraqi Kurdistan and Yemen—have undergone the procedures. The international community has called for the end of the method as it does not have health benefits. FGM can have long term severe affects on girls ranging from loss of sexual pleasure to death.
