Genrikh Yagoda was the director of the NKVD from 1934 to 1936. He utilized forced labor from gulags to build the White Sea-Baltic Canal, which led to the deaths of 12,000-25,000 people. He was also one of the perpetrators of the Holodomor.
Eventually he became a victim of the Purge and was executed on the grounds of sabotage and espionage.
