Giuseppe "Joe The Boss" Masseria (17th January 1886-15th April 1931) was the boss of the "Masseria family", a US Mafia family.
As a Mafia member, Masseria was the rival of Salvatore D'Aquila, who attempted to have Umberto Valenti kill Masseria in a drive-by shooting. However, Valenti and his men failed to kill Masseria, although they did kill two bystanders and a horse, and Valenti was soon lured into a trap by Masseria and assassinated by Lucky Luciano, who was Masseria' s lieutenant at the time. D'Aquila and other gang bosses were murdered and their gangs assimilated by allies of Masseria such as Anthony Carfarno soon after as Masseria attempted to take over the New York Mafia gangs.
With Masseria in charge of the majority of the gangs, he attempted to take control of the Castellammarese Mob, making their leader disappear and placing his own candidate in charge. However, Masseria' s candidate was murdered by Salvatore Maranzano, who then took over the Castellammarese Mob. This started what is known as the "Castellammarese War", as Masseria and Maranzano fought over the Castellammarese Mob. In the end, Masseria was killed during a meeting with Lucky, who had been bribed along with Vito Genovese. At the end of the meeting, Lucky left the room, and Vito, Bugsy Siegel, Albert Anastasia and Joe Adonis rushed in and shot Masseria repeatedly.
