Wirz was the overseer of of [[Andersonville National Historic Site|Camp Sumter]], a Confederate [[prisoner-of-war camp]] near Andersonville, Georgia, where inhumane conditions caused the high mortality rate of [[Union (American Civil War)|Union]] POWs. After the war, Wirz was tried and executed for [[Conspiracy (crime)|conspiracy]] and [[murder]] relating to his command of the camp.
