Wirz was the overseer of Camp Sumter, a Confederate prisoner-of-war camp near Andersonville, Georgia, where inhumane conditions and lack of food caused the high mortality rate of Union POWs. Wirz was also accused by witnesses of having kicked, stomped and beaten inmates, ordered his troops to carry out extrajudicial executions and personally killed several prisoners by shooting them. On one occasion, he was said to have attacked a prisoner with dogs. After the war, Wirz was tried and executed for conspiracy and murder relating to his command of the camp. Stub
