Not to be confused with Francisco Franco Humberto de Alencar Castello Branco was a Brazillian army officer and the first 20th century dictator of Brazil coming to power in 1964. During the years of the junta thousands were arrested, tortured and sent into exile. Soon after resigining from officer Branco was killed in a plane crash.
