===Taishō era=== In 1914, Japan entered World War I on the side of the Allies and seized Imperial Germany's colonial territories in China and the Pacific with the help of the British Empire. Shortly after the fall of Russia's tsarist regime, US president [[Woodrow Wilson]] requested Japan to intervene and support their clause in the Russian Civil War. After the U.S. and its allies withdrew from the intervention, Japan initially decided to stay, primarily due to fear of the influence of communism in Japan, but was forced to withdraw under pressure by the US and the British Empire. Under the policy of Taishō democracy, several aspects of Japanese society have been reformed, such as improvement in education and self-determination in regards to politics and feminism.
