At 2:34 PM, Jarrod entered into the Capital Gazette building with a Mossberg 500 shotgun and barricaded the rear entrance. He then began to fire into an office and started shooting people, during a pause many people fled but Wendi Winters charged at Jarrod with a trash can and a recycling but was shot dead by him. Police later discovered Jarrod underneath a desk and took him into custody
