Jarrod Warren Ramos (December 21, 1979-) is an American mass shooter who killed 5 people and injured 2 at the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland on June 28, 2018.

Early Life

Ramos was the son of Miguel Ramos who worked for the NSA. In his senior year in high school, he was suspended for having a hit list with names of students on it.

Legal Issues

In 2009 he found one of his classmates on Facebook and reached out to her, it first started off normal but in 2012 Ramos began sending her emails telling her to hang herself. The girl at first tried to ignore but the harassment continued and it even go to the point where Ramos got her fired after telling her employer that she was bipolar and a drunkard, she later went to the police and Ramos plead guilty to Harassment and was given probation. After the Capital Gazette wrote about the incident he tried to sue them but loss because the case was public record.

The Shooting

At 2:34 PM, Ramos entered into the Capital Gazette building with a Mossberg 500 shotgun and barricaded the rear entrance. He then began to fire into an office and started shooting people. During a pause many people fled but Wendi Winters charged at Ramos with a trash can and a recycling bin but was shot dead by him. Police later discovered Ramos underneath a desk and took him into custody.

Legal proceedings

Ramos was officially charged in July 2018. He pleaded guilty but not criminally responsible due to insanity. However, he was deemed sane after an evaluation by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. The trial was delayed several times due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. At trial, testimony was heard from survivors of the shooting and a court-appointed psychiatrist who told the court that Ramos was motivated by a fixation on revenge and had expressed regret that he had been unable to kill everyone in the building. In July 2021 the jury rejected Ramos's insanity defence and convicted him on all counts. On 28 September 2021 he received six life sentences plus an additional 345 years in prison.
