'''James "Jim" Warren Jones '''(May 13<sup>th</sup>, 1931 - November 18<sup>th</sup>, 1978) was the founder of the [[Peoples Temple]], which was a socialist/communist group. He created a communist sanctuary in Guyana called Peoples Temple Agriculture Project, better known by its informal name "Jonestown" He is responsible for the deaths of 909 people, 304 of them children, by persuading them to drink Flavor-Aid laced with cyanide, tranquilizers, and other sedatives.

Jim Jones was once a Christian Preacher who set up his new church cult based on racially integrated, communist, and utopian teachings. He claimed to be an incarnation of Jesus, Akhenaton, and Buddha, and [[Vladimir Lenin]]. He was also a habitual drug user of LSD and marijuana while also being convicted of homosexual soliciting in 1973. 

Jim Jones' cult was also infamous for gunning down [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leo_Ryan US Congressman Leo Ryan], and 4 others of Ryan's group who were investigating the strange events and alleged human rights abuses that were going on in the community prior to the ultimate mass-suicide.

Jim Jones was found dead alongside his followers from a self-inflicted gunshot wound yet would be remembered as the mastermind of the greatest single loss of American civilian life in a deliberate act until [[September 11 attacks|the attacks of September 11th]] occurred.
