I have great remorse for this. I’ve totally wiped out all of my income and have lost any chance of getting my law license back.

ABSCAM scandal edit

In 1978, the sting operation ABSCAM was set up by the FBI to investigate forgery, stolen art and general theft. It centred around a fictional company called Abdul Industries that was created to investigate the target areas, which soon led to possible political corruption when a forger who was under investigation claimed that gambling licences could be obtained for a price. During the investigation, Jenrette was approached by an undercover FBI agent and offered a bribe of fifty thousand dollars. The FBI agent recorded the conversation, including Jenrette admitting that he had accepted a bribe from an associate. He was arrested and served thirteen months in federal prison.

Theft conviction edit

Jenrette was arrested in 1989 after stealing a necktie and a pair of shoes from a shop in suburban Washington. He was fined two hundred dollars and served thirty days in a local prison. Before sentencing, he said he was remorseful, as well as that he had wiped out all his income.
