John Wes Townley

John Wes Townley is an American professional racecar driver. He has competed in NASCAR's Xfinity and Truck series.

He has gone into infamy for domestically abusing his former wife Laura Bird, at one point throwing her and beating her down to the floor senselessly. He was sentenced 12 months probation for disorderly conduct. He has since separated from Laura Bird, filing for divorce in February 2021 and officially separating in September later that year.

Death

Townley died on October 2, 2021, when he ambushed his ex-wife Laura Bird and her new relationship partner Zachary Anderson with a hatchet in her home in Athens, Georgia. Zachary Anderson fought back, armed with a gun, and shot Townley, who died on the premises. Anderson shot Bird by accident as well, who luckily did survive but sustained serious injuries.

  • He is the son of Tony Townley, who along with business partner Zach McLeroy, founded the chicken restaurant chain Zaxby's.
  • He was named after English clergyman John Wesley.
