The Jokela High School Massacre was a school shooting perpetrated by Pekka-Eric Auvinen, a finnish 18-year-old, who killed 8 people with a semi-automatic pistol and injured one in the toe.

At 11:40 a.m., Pekka-Eric Auvinen entered the ground-floor main hallway of the Jokela High School. At 11:42 a.m., he encountered a student in the corridor and killed him, then he moved to the lavatories. At the lavatories, Auvinen shot two other students, prompting the school nurse to call emergency services. After killing another student outside the lavatory, Auvinen ran after the nurse, caught up to her, and killed shot her and another student too. At 11:47 a.m., Auvinen began shouting and firing randomly. At one point, he encountered the mother of a student as she was entering the school, but spared her. Afterwards, Auvinen shot three times through a barricaded door and hitted a student in the toe in an attempt to enter a classroom. Then, Auvinen moved to the school's second floor and found two students sitting on a bench in the corridor, shooting one of them while the other one escaped uninjured.

Later, Auvinen began pouring two-stroke engine fuel on the walls and floorss of the corridor, but he was not able to ignite the fuel. Then, he went to the school canteen on the first floor and tried to enter, but the sliding glass doors were locked. After demanding to be let in, Auvinen fired through the glass, hitting some chairs inside. At 11:54 a.m., Auvinen emerged from the school while cursing and encountered Helena Kalmi (head teacher of the school), who tried to convince him to surrender. At 11:57 a.m., he shot her seven times in view of a group of students in the schoolyard, fatally wounding her. Afterward, Auvinen reentered the school to go back to the first floor and began walking around, knocking on classroom doors. Then, he entered an occupied comprehensive-school classroom. Inside the classroom, he shouted to some students orders, urging the students to destroy school property. There, he fired two shots at a television set and a window and left the classroom without shooting anyone.

A few minutes later, Auvinen spotted and fired to the first responding police officers and paramedics converging at the area of the inner court through a window, but the bullets failed to penetrate the glass. At 12:03 a.m., Auvinen went near to the main entrance and fired two more shots at police officers who tried negotiate with him, but none of them were hit. Afterward, he walked into the lavatory next to the canteen and threw his jacket and bag on the floor and shot himself in the head, ending the shooting at 12:04 a.m.

Aftermath

Auvinen was found and taken to the Töölö campus of Helsinki University Central Hospital at 14:45, where he died at 10:15 p.m. from the gunshot wound.
