Martinez was first jailed in a separate robbery case in April 2016 when a group of men chased a 14-year-old boy in Freeport, New York, assaulted and robbed the teen of his cell phone and wallet containing cash<ref>patch.com/new-york/freeport/man-arrested-robbing-teen-freeport-police-0</ref>.

Martinez was jailed for the murder in June 2018 in Paterson, New Jersey and then found guilty of first-degree murder, second-degree 

murder, manslaughter, gang assault, conspiracy and weapon possession in June 2019.

Jonaiki Martinez-Estrella was eventually convicted of first-degree murder with four other men in October 2019 and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole<ref>https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/11/nyregion/junior-guzman-feliz-trinitarios.html</ref>.

Martinez-Estrella is currently imprisoned at Elmira Correctional Facility, according to the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision website.
