Jonasia Simpson is a US girl variously reported to be 13, 15, or 16 at the time of her act of cruelty.[1][2] In May 2017 she placed her pet turtle in a microwave and cooked it to death so she could share the experience online.[3] She is from Boston, Massachusetts[4] where abusing and/or neglecting an animal carries up to 7 years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.[2]

She quickly became the target of an angry Twitter backlash and a petition was started to get the Boston Police Department to prosecute here.[5]
