José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia y Velasco was a Paraguayan lawyer and politician who was the dictator of Paraguay from 1814 till his death in 1840.
Reception towards his political leadership has been very polarized. While local Paraguayans consider him to be rather skilled for his contributions towards Paraguyan industry, farming and military building, other historians view his power as a dictatorship, for how he abused his power to forbid Spaniards from marrying each other and eliminated all external trade.
