==The Assassination==
On 6 October 1981, a victory parade was held in [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cairo Cairo] to commemorate [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Badr_%281973%29 Egypt's crossing of the Suez Canal].<sup class="reference" id="cite_ref-year81upi_1-1">[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassination_of_Anwar_Sadat#cite_note-year81upi-1 [1]]</sup> Sadat was protected by four layers of security and eight bodyguards, and the army parade should have been safe due to [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ammunition ammunition]-seizure rules. As [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egyptian_Air_Force Egyptian Air Force] [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dassault_Mirage Mirage] jets flew overhead, distracting the crowd, [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egyptian_Army Egyptian Army] soldiers and troop trucks paraded. One troop truck contained the assassination squad.. As the truck passed, the assassins dismounted, and Islambouli approached Sadat. Sadat stood to receive his salute, whereupon, Islambouli threw three grenades at Sadat, only one of which exploded, and additional assassins rose from the truck, firing [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_rifle assault rifles] into the stands. After Sadat was hit and fell to the ground, people threw chairs around him to protect him from the hail of bullets.

The attack lasted about two minutes. Sadat and eleven others were killed, including the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuba Cuban] ambassador, an [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oman Omani] general, and a [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coptic_Orthodox Coptic Orthodox] bishop. Twenty-eight were wounded, including Vice President [[Hosni Mubarak]], [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minister_for_Defence_%28Ireland%29 Irish Defence Minister] [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Tully_%28Irish_politician%29 James Tully], and four US military liaison officers. Security forces were momentarily stunned but reacted within seconds. One of the attackers was killed, and the three others injured and arrested.
