On 6 June 2020, Mouat approached the teenagers in Sterling State Park and accused them of playing their "ghetto music" too loudly, before yelling racial slurs at them and telling them that "Black lives don't matter". He then walked to his car and returned with a large bike lock on a chain, which he swung at 18-year-old Devin Freelon, hitting him in the face, fracturing his jaw and knocking out several teeth. He then unsuccessfully attempted to hit the other teenager before yelling a racial slur and fleeing the scene. After hearing witness reports, Michigan police arrested Mouat on suspicion of a Federal hate crime. He accepted a plea deal in which he admitted to the crime and was sentenced to five years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.
