On 16 August 2020, Love and several friends were participating in a riot in Portland. During the riot Love and his friends attacked an unidentified white man for no clear reason and beat him up, chasing him to a local 7/11. A transgender woman attempted to intervene and was also beaten up by Love and his friends, who stole her bookbag. Two black men and one white man, Adam Haner, attempted to intervene in the assault, at which point Love yelled at the black men for "taking the wrong side". Haner's girlfriend also attempted to intervene but was attacked by Love and fled the scene in her car. Haner also attempted to flee in his truck but crashed into a post, at which point Love pulled him out and forced him to sit down on the ground. While Haner was on the ground Love began to pummel him and and kicked him in the face, knocking him out. Love fled, but the whole incident had been caught on video and posted on Twitter by bystanders.
Later that night Love uploaded a video to social media admitting to the assault, expressing the belief that he had actually killed Haner and claiming that the attack had been in self-defense. He also gave his full name in this video, sparking a police hunt until he turned himself in two days later. Love pleaded guilty to third-degree assault and felony rioting and was sentenced to around two years in prison.
