Martin Shkreli (March 17th, 1983 -) is a businessman and hedge fund manager, who founded Elea Capital, MSMB Capital Management, and MSMB Healthcare. Shkreli is also the founder and former CEO of Turing Pharmaceuticals. In September 2015, Shkreli received widespread scrutiny for raising the prices on anti-parasitic drug Daraphrim by 5000% from $13.50 to $750 a pill. The move was criticized by numerous organizations, and candidates of the 2016 presidential election, Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Donald Trump. Shkreli also is most infamous for obtaining the only copy of the Wu-Tang Clan album, Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, where he adamantly refuses to release the album and threatens to destroy the album.
Trial
Martin Shkreli was arrested on December 17th, 2015 by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Shkreli was charged with 8 counts of securities fraud. Charges were filed after an investigation into his tenure at is other companies, which is similar to that of a Ponzi scheme. On August 14th, 2017, Shkreli was found guilty on two counts of securities fraud and was sentenced to seven years in prison, and had to pay fines up to $7.4 million.
