Mary Kay Letourneau is a schoolteacher who received national infamy for the rape of elementary school student Vili Fualaau. Fualaau was a student in both of her second and sixth grade classes at Shorewood Elementary in Washington.

In 1996, Letourneau had sexual intercourse with Fualaau in her car. When authorities got suspicious, Letourneau made him lie about his age, making him state that he was 18 years of age. She was later arrested on March 4, 1997 after a relative reported her disgusting actions to law enforcement. The state initially sought to give her six-and-a-half years in prison, but by a plea agreement, her sentence was reduced to six months, three of which were under suspension. Although she completed her sentence, she became a repeat offender when only two months afterwards, she continued to stalk and rape Fualaau. She attempted to lie again to police, but was once again arrested.

It has also been reported that a cause for her sexual pleasure with Fualaau is her toxic marriage. She and her husband, Steve Letourneau, got into many fights and were drowning in financial debt. Letourneau was known to physically and emotionally abuse Steve commonly. In fact, Letourneau admitted that she was never truly in love with Steve, and instead only married him because her parents urged her to do so.

She gave birth to two children with her student via sexual battery and impregnation. The first child was born on May 29, 1997 whilst awaiting for trial. She later gave birth to a second child on October 16, 1998 while imprisoned for the second time. Following the force responsibility of the two children as well as the rape trauma he went through, Fualaau attempted suicide and became addicted to alcohol, dropping out of high school altogether. In 2002, Fualaau's family sued the school district and the state for failing to protect their child from sexual manipulation and trauma from a schoolteacher.

She was released from prison to a community placement program on August 4, 2004 and ultimately registered as a sex offender. Letourneau passed away in July 2020 from colon cancer.

Trivia

  • At age 13, Vili Fualaau stands as one of the youngest fathers recorded in history. While there are supposedly younger fathers recorded, most are unidentified and were recorded simply from age reports. However, Fualaau stands as the second-youngest father to give become a father from sexual manipulation and rape, the youngest being Chris McBride (age 12) from nanny Marissa Mowry.
