In 1988 he was convicted of murdering three Irish republicans during a terrorist attack at Milltown Cemetery, Belfast, and of murdering three Catholic civilians on previous occasions. He was released on licence in 2000 under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement, but was later returned to prison in 2008 for plotting to murder republican politicians Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness.
